This plan for a retractable roof ballpark in the Shea Stadium parking lot was unveiled in April 1998. Initially, plans also called for a field that moved out into the parking lot when not in use. The ballpark was designed by HOK Sport in conjunction with Jack L. Gordon Architects.
The Mets, Yankees and New York City originally came to an agreement for financing in 2001 that would have built this park and another dome for the Yankees, but fell through after Mayor Giuliani’s term ended. Along with some other features, the movable roof and field were gone from the plans unveiled in 2006 for the final version of Citi Field.

Later, more stylized version of the retractable dome concept.
