Prior to finalizing plans for Three Rivers Stadium, these three designs were considered in the 50's and 60's. Two concepts were released in 1958, one for a round multipurpose stadium on the north side and another for a stadium built on a platform in the Monongahela River. In 1963, a second concept for the north side was proposed for a stadium with an open end that looked over downtown Pittsburgh. This plan was abandoned due to cost issues. The simpler Three Rivers Stadium design was then built.
