In January 1992, San Jose and the San Francisco Giants announced an agreement in principle for the team to move to San Jose for the 1996 season. Plans called for a 45,000 seat, open air, baseball-only stadium. The ballpark failed at referendum in June 1992 causing the Giants to nearly move to Tampa Bay before getting Pacific Bell Park by 2000.
